safe adaptation
From VOA News:
Joe Wright's Anna Karenina, based on the Tolstoy novel, is a quintessential holiday production. It offers rich costumes, enchanting music, and stellar actors.
Keira Knightley, who plays the doomed Karenina, “The rules of a period film have been completely broken. Anna Karenina is a story that has been done a lot. What is the point in doing a safe adaptation?”
My questions:
1 What exactly is holiday production?
2 What does "safe adapation" mean?
Thanks.

Re: safe adaptation
**** NOT A TEACHER *****
1. The movie comes out during the holidays.
2. Anna Karenina is a story that has been done a lot. Do you see the implication of this sentence? 'Safe' here means 'not involving any risk'.

Re: safe adaptation
1.Does "the holidays" mainly refer to the Christmas?
2.Is Keira Knightley trying to say that Joe Wright's version of Anna Karenina is kind of a "risky adaptation"?

We can't tell without more context.

That's the implication.

Re: safe adaptation
This time of year "the holidays" refers to the Christmas and New Year holidays. And also to Hanukkah.
