I am not a teacher. I need help answering this question for my grandson. He needs to know if the word mother is used as a proper noun in the following sentence.
I will use a decoy to avoid the angry mob, said Mother.
Thank you for your help.
afelton, welcome to the forums!
If used as a proper noun, 'Mother' is capitalized.
Correct: "I will use a decoy to avoid the angry mob, said Mother."
Correct: "I will use a decoy to avoid the angry mob, said his mother."
Please note the correct spelling of 'grammar' for the title of your post.
Cheers,
A4
If we are going to make corrections, then there should be quotation marks around "I will use a decoy to avoid the angry mob" since it is a direct quote.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
