Using 'as' as subordinator.

Please, is this use of 'as' correct?

Yes.

Also, "subordinator" sounds like some kind of super villain. (He was once a mild-mannered grammarian, before genetically altered vegetables twisted him into the criminal mastermind known only as 'The Subordinator'!!!)

I would use "while" in that sentence.
