Informativity

Hello everyone,

There have already been some disputes about the English word "informativity" in the meaning of a characteristic of something providing information about "this something". For instance, "informativity of an announcement" means how much useful information this announcement contains. Another example is "informativity of a book" - the meaning is how useful the book has turned out be from the point of view of the information required.

Do you agree wit this definition? If not, please suggest another word for "informativity".

I'm not sure why the disputes have been about the meaning. As far as I'm aware, the word doesn't exist so I wouldn't bother arguing about the meaning of a non-existent word. There are no definitions online and it doesn't appear in my dictionary.

Informativity concerns the extent to which the contents of a text are already known or expected as compared to unknown or unexpected. No matter how expected or predictable content may be, a text will always be informative at least to a certain degree due to unforeseen variability. The processing of highly informative text demands greater cognitive ability but at the same time is more interesting. The level of informativity should not exceed a point such that the text becomes too complicated and communication is endangered. Conversely, the level of informativity should also not be so low that it results in boredom and the rejection of the text.

It's jargon. Use it if your audience knows the topic. Don't expect it to be understood by a general audience any more than any other jargon is.
