    Default Between bites?

“I eat most of my meals on the train!” said Nisse Greenberg, 25, between bites of a falafel sandwich yesterday on the N line.

    What does between bits mean?
    It's not clear to me.

    What does between bits mean?
It's "between bites". Nissa took a bite of her sandwich, chewed and swallowed it, said those words, and then took another bite.

    ...
A bit of local knowledge: if the conversation took place in London, Nisse Greenberg was on 'the Northern Line' (not 'the N. line'). The Northern Line is not particularly northern; it simply connects the north of London with the south. I've never heard it called 'the N. line' (though in an SMS message I suppose it might be).

It could have been the N Line on the New York subway.

    That was what I assumed.

I thought maybe something like that was behind it. Hence my ' if the conversation took place in London...'. Come to think of it, the falafel sandwich might well place it in New York - sounds most unBritish!

Note that Americans often misunderstand the meaning of the word 'subway' when it's used by speakers of BrE.

...especially in view of the chain of fast-food shops called Subway!

I've had second thoughts about the falafel sandwiches - they're probably quite common at the northern end of London's Northern Line (big Jewish community).
