If the dinner belonged to the dog, it was its dinner. If the dinner belonged to me, it was my dinner.

Once the dog had started eating, wouldn't it automatically becomes the dog's dinner?

The word "its" is a possessive adjective.
The word "it's" is a conctraction of "it is" or "it has".

    Hi

it's is used instead of it is, while
its is used when describing that it has.
