I can't.There is no option let me choose.
It is written only:

Some member can, some cannot.
I posted a question regarding this but no answer so far. I do not think something could be done about it and I put up with the pre-defined images.

Chaste, did you try to save your avatar as a jpeg? You should be able to 'browse' for the jpeg and then post it to your profile.

I'm not sure about whether we should or not, but I suspect we can't until we make a certain number of posts. There is no facility for uploading a .jpg, at least in my "Edit Profile" page.
Maybe an administrator could clarify this.
