Hello! I need some grammar check

I don't have problems with the pressure so I don't go to contests for gaining experience anymore. Yes, I had tried the English Olimpiade

I asked since they are a good way to get some experience in exams.

after that, I've given up I gave up - because you said 'after that' ie. after you had tried the Olimpiade because there were some Olimpiades where I thought that I would be doing better would have done better . (I'm sure I have several mistakes in this short paragraph)

I came back with another short paragraph (I'm not sure if it's too early, but anyhow, I'm not asking for an immediate check.) :

Looking into his eyes was giving me a rise of uncertainty. His persistent fixedly look was asking for something I can't fully understand even now, when I can analyse things more clearly. I would have smiled discomforted with anyone else in this kind of situation but his severe expression was not allowing this to happen so I felt the need to say something:
"You can't subtract my self-confidence like this, your eyes betrey you", I said with the most categorical tone that I could gather in that overpressured situation. But unfortunately it wasn't enough.
