Help proofreading paragraphs

I would like to know if anyone can help me with the following paragraphs:

My main responsibility as an assistant teacher was serving as a translator since Ms. Mallory did not speak Spanish. It was then that I realized the importance and usefulness of my second language. This is why I would like to pursue a Bilingual Extension at XXX. I currently reside in XXXX a culturally diverse neighborhood, with a large percentage of students being English Language Learners.
Although I have come a long way since my summer job as a first grade assistant teacher, I do not plan to stop anytime soon. My goal is to continue my studies so that I may become a more effective classroom teacher. In the future I hope to pursue a Phd in Education. My work with children has not only shaped me into a greater person but will also motivate me to help inspire the upcoming generation.
