Study English in an English-speaking country is the best way, but not the only one to improve language skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Evarybody wants to learn English because it is currently the language of Business, Science, Telecommunication, Tourism and International Culture. However, speakers of other languages have adopted different methods to enhance their English skills and the most effective one seems to be enrolling in an English course taught in an English-speaking country.
Firstly, studying in an English-speaking country would provide the student with a constant exposure to the language beyond the classroom. Students would no longer be learning only with their classmates and teachers during lessons, but also when they share with other people in the street or in their leisure time. Different situations would arise when they go to the groceries store, when they travel by bus or train, or when they visit museums and movie theatres, learning also different vocabulary and improving other language skills while having fun.
In addition, the cultural contact with an English population would be higher. Students may start to feel more confident about their English abilities when they have to speak and interact with local people, requesting for example an address or the bill in a restaurant. Hence, constant practice would reinforce their confidence to express themselves in English, which may reflect positively in their academic performance.
Despite these benefits, some people usually choose other methods to improve their English. One of the main reasons is that traveling to an English-speaking country may be expensive and not affordable by everyone. They would rather prefer to invest their money in local classes with an experienced tutor, probably from an English background, and strongly dedicate themselves to learn and practice their skills. This approach can be equally effective if it can be suited among other daily activities and responsibilities related to their jobs, family and friends. Their listening, reading and writing skills could be well improved after a strong effort, although their English speaking abilities would be better excelled by constantly practicing with native English people.
In conclusion, stuying English in an English-speaking country appears to be the best strategy to improve the language, eventhough other approaches may be cheaper and equally effective with a substantial commitment.
