    Is the above sentence correctly phrased?

    Better, but still not wonderful is:

    The father of David, one of my friends, is a lawyer.

    what about writing it this way,
    One of my friends, David's father, is a lawyer.

    I think with your sentence David's father becomes my friend. But David's father is not my friend, David is.
