Nowadays, as the competition for job opportunities is increasingly stiff, employees are required to be more skillful and professional for the job they want to pursue. In that respect, there has been considerable debate about whether university education should prepare students for employment or not. Some people assert that university education should prepare students for employment while many others argue that it should help students acquire theoretical knowledge. Personally, I am in favor of the latter view.
Convincing arguments are that theoretical knowledge is the base of its further application. To start with, theoretical knowledge set up the fundamental knowledge system which enhances students’ cognitive abilities. Understanding of theoretical knowledge would make the students more familiar with the regulation of its corresponding industry or business and help to select their ultimate career path. Moreover, theoretical knowledge is an indispensable part of practice as it profoundly guides us the way we live and work. Specifically, industry productions which improved our life quality, such as electricity, lamps and computers, were only brought into being because inventors mastered the theoretical knowledge well. Lastly, solid understanding of theoretical knowledge is required in some profession areas such as medicine and accountancy. In other words, theoretical knowledge improves one’s career skill.
Admittedly, a university education that prepares students for employment by practical training, help them become more practical experience that make it easy to find a job after graduation. The reason for this is that employers prefer to employ workers with working experience. Obviously, the one who is well trained and able to handle the job within short time will be a highly competitive candidate. Even so, comprehensive quality has always been considered highly; moreover, it is even seen as very essential. For instance, companies which usually provide work training for new employees value their employees’ overall qualities highly.
In summary, I concede that preparing students for employment would help them find a job after graduation. Despite that, acquired theoretical knowledge is a powerful tool for university students to deal with the world around them. Overall, I am convinced that universities should focus more on theoretical knowledge.
