Shakespeare Global Theatre “Measure by Measure” is a theatrical performance that reveals the clothing, music, and theatrical setting during Shakespeare time. These performances succeed in recapturing the mood, costumes, and singing of the Elizabethan era of Shakespeare. The performances deal with life challenging obstacles through the characters’ confrontation with lust, morality and manipulation. While the acting and the props accurately recreate the feeling of Shakespeare time, the singing failed to convey any creditable emotion from the actors.
The performance succeeded in recapturing the feeling of the Elizabethan period through the costumes used by the male actors. Each of the Elizabethan costumes is designed to help the male actors to portray more believable female characters. One of the character wore a comical dark red dress along with a miniature hat on a golden wig. This costume portrays a comical female character that often makes vulgar comments about the opposite sex.
The female costumes are critical for Shakespeare play because all of the casts are male. By using female clothing with lipsticks, dresses, enormous hats and blond wigs, the male actors is able to portray female characters. Furthermore, the tight-knitted dress of the Elizabethan dresses causes the actors to breathe differently. Hence, their voice is more high-pitched due to the tight costumes used. This forces the male actors to adapt more female voices by using their lower torso and upper chest for the dialogues. One character, “Sofia” made a comical remark on how unfaithful men can be with other female characters played by male actors.
The dialogue is very well written, since it explores the human condition of sexual lust and manipulation of human through these women. The singing did not keep up with the background music and were out of sync. Overall, the singing and the music could use a little more work to create a smoother transition between dialogue and singing. |
