My understanding is that culture shock can occur when someone who has lived in one culture is suddenly put into another culture.

Good question! 'What is culture shock?' or 'Why does culture shock happen?' strike me as meaningful questions. I'm not sure what 'How does culture shock happen?' even means. It's a bad question.
