However, this study was conducted in 1998 and no study has been done in Australia after this report. Therefore it is essential to conduct a study on the quality of information provided by sale representatives because conditions have changed since the last study. For example, in the Australian Department of Health and Ageing Health Budget for 2002-2003, pharmaceutical manufacturers have agreed to support the government in providing information to doctors about medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in order to secure the future of the PBS. Medical representatives from drug companies will inform doctors of the PBS prescribing requirements. This proposed study will evaluate whether this is implemented in practice and will provide recent data pertaining what sales representatives tell physicians when promoting their products.
