Like the acquisition of any language, intrinsic motivation has proved to be the most effective motivational factor for acquiring a second language. There are a few basic things to learn about the language, but once you have covered the basics, the best thing to do is read, write, talk, watch, and listen in
English.

When I used to teach Spanish, I tried using a lot of music cause people like that and they sing along and that leads them to curiosity about what the lyrics say.

The internet (chat) is a great instrument for the acquisition of a second language because rather than the old method of having a pen pal, this way you find a person that you feel comfortable with and you exchange. That person will guide you through the nuances of the target langauge and eventually you will harness the language (the degree to which you harness it will depend greatly upon you).
