Default Could It Happen to You?

Could it happen to me? A study on Lung Cancer
Lung Cancer kills over 160,000 people a year. Women are even twice as vulnerable to get lung cancer as men are (Cowley 42-49). Lung Cancer has become a big deal today because it is so deadly. People need to know why they are at risk, how people get it, and how they can lower there chance of getting this disease.
Lung Cancer affects more people than any other type of cancer being because everyone is at risk. You can get Lung Cancer multiple ways, the most common is smoking of cigarettes. One pack a day for twenty years increases your likelihood of getting Lung Cancer by 50 percent (Cowley 42-49). Another common way to get Lung Cancer is air pollution; this increases your possibility to getting this disease. When you breathe in smoke or exhausts from a car or smoke stack, all the bad chemicals fill your lungs, the effect is the same as smoking. Other causes are genetic history of Lung Cancer, lung disease, or chemicals like: asbestos, Bis chloromethy ethers (BCME) (Organic chemical production), and arsenic (“What”). If we were able to reduce the chemicals that are spread in the air daily, then we could dramatically decrease the number of people getting Lung Cancer.

Some people think that Lung Cancer only affects your lungs, but actually the effects of this deadly cancer go way far beyond your lungs. Swelling of your face and neck, coughing, severe shortness of breath, and chest pain, are the painful effects of having Lung Cancer (“What”). You may even have this disease today and not even know it, because the serious effects don’t even occur until the disease is well established.

Don’t Smoke! Though these words seem so simple, some people cannot stop; even knowing that that is the easiest way to prevent getting Lung Cancer. Staying out of heavily polluted areas can also help your lungs stay clean and immune from the cancer. While these things are ways you can help yourself, you can also help other people by not polluting the environment around you. Now if you do have this unfortunate cancer there are ways you can get rid of it. Treatments for this disease are Clinical Trials, Photodynamic therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery (“What”).

By understanding the causes of Lung Cancer and how to prevent them, hopefully the percentage of people getting this disease will decrease. Now that your knowledge about Lung Cancer has grown, I hope that you keep your body healthy and not have to go through the severe pain and discomfort of this terrible cancer.

Do not capitalize lung cancer, as it is not a proper noun.
