Mobile Phones I wrote this essay about the impact that mobiles phones have had on our society. Could you read it and tell me your opinions?
Thank you! From expensive status symbol, to a must-have item: could you live without your mobile phone? If people were questioned about this, what would they answer? Nowadays mobiles are such an extremely important part of our lives, that living without it would probably not be possible anymore. According to a recent study, in 2006 almost 3 billions people had a mobile phone and today, in some countries such as Italy or United Kingdom there are more mobiles than inhabitants. In addition to this, by 2010 it is expected that around 90% of the world's population will have a mobile network coverage. If 20 years ago having a mobile was quite rare and very expensive, today almost everybody has at least one of them, as a result of a steady decrease of prices and of a continuous improvement of technologies. As a consequence of this striking spread, mobile phones have radically changed and improved our lives making communication easier and faster. For istance, if you are waiting for an important call, you no longer have to stay home waiting for the telephone to ring. A mobile phone makes you always reachable. Furthermore, mobile phones are undoubtedly useful in case of emergency. If your car stops working in the middle of the night, or any sort of accident happens and you need an ambulance as soon as possible, a mobile gives you the opportunity to make a call almost everywhere. To conclude, mobile phones have had a huge impact on our society. They have changed our lives becoming a sort of essential “extension” of the body, and one of the last century's symbol par excellence.
