To win the honor of hosting the Olympic Games, Chinese people began their competition with other countries as early as 14 years ago, when I was a freshman in college. I still remember how upset all my roommates were at the news from VOA that China's bid for hosting the 2000 Olympic Games was turned down. However, 14 years later, China is embracing the coming 2008 Olympic Games. Needless to say, it is a big event for any Chinese people, either it be beneficial or not.
When our country was going all out to bid for the Olympic Games, everyone was told it was a campaign that we Chinese should never lose to other countries. With all the astronomical sums of money to be raised for the construction of the new sports facilities required for hosting the Olympic Games, every Chinese was made to believe the profits our country were to get from tourism, television commercial and Olympic-related product sales would be even bigger. More job opportunities were to come along with the Games as many grand hotels were to be built to house numerous visitors from around the world that were to come to watch the Games. The foreign visitors then were to travel around China after the Games and maybe some were to find Chinese a good place to invest money into. The list of advantages of hosting the Olympic Games has kept going with a blueprint of a brighter future in everyone's mind.
However, as prices of food began to go up at a breathtaking speed not long ago , some people began to question the justification of spending the money that could have been used to build a healthier economy and improve the welfare of all the Chinese citizens on extraordinarily expensive gyms , sports fields and hotels. The heavy snows at the beginning months of 2008 left southern Chinese cities in anguish of resource shortage. Appeals enhance in media of strengthening the infrastructure in poorer areas of China to safeguard the lives of common people in time of natural disasters. Thus money is badly needed, though it seems harder to get now than before. Some economists even predict that Chinese economy will suffer a recession immediately after the Games on the grounds that many real estates in big cities have appreciated greatly in value due to unrealistic optimism in the drive towards Chinese economy of the Olympic Games. When the Games is over, bubbles are to break, they warn.
Though questions in mind, every Chinese is looking forward to the date when the grand 2008 Olympic Games are to open.
