Into the wild
Into the Wild, written by Jon Krakauer and published in 1996, is a bestselling non-fiction book about thrilling adventures and unbelievable travel of Christopher McCandless. This engrossing book is based on a real unforgettable story, which happened in the U.S.A.
Writer has got to know about Chris when he had been founded death with his travel diary and without any personal identification in the middle of Alaska wilderness in 1992. Krakauer was interested in tragic fate of Chris, which particularly reminded him of his own life experience. That is why author spent on long three years to find more about young man and his compelling reasons for leaving his family and modern society.
Jon Krakauer presents us most important moments from Chris life. Moreover, author touches on many themes that cross everyone’s lives and discuss general condition of youth than just McCandless’s individual situation and decisions.
Christopher McCandless was 22 years old when he graduated from college in Boston in 1990. He came from well-to-do family but he didn’t like his parents for their endless quarrels and hunger for success and money. His parents due to their work didn’t pay much attention to him and his younger sister. So he devote most of free time to reading adventurous book about fearless Jack London and John Muir. He also loved Russian writers such as Tolstoy or Dostojevski who described romantic and idealistic life of their heroes in wilderness, far away from consumer society.
Chris wanted to encounter this unlimited freedom. Therefore, he left without saying goodbye to his family to live like a tramp. He tried to get rid of modern society, its inventions and advantages. So he donated $25 000 (savings for his further studies) to charity, burnt all his cash, abandoned his car and most of his possessions. He changed his name and called himself Alexander Supertramp. His parents noticed they made terrible mistake. Therefore, they tried to find him with the aid of police but they weren’t successful. During Chris travel, he met new friends and learnt how to survive in countryside. He hitchhiked through whole U.S.A. to Alaska.
In Alaska, Chris smoothly lived in abandoned bus in middle of nowhere. After three months, he broke his leg and couldn’t collect any berry or browse. Finally, he starved to death due to sustained injuries and unsuitable hunting equipment (had only small-bore rifle with which he couldn’t kill reindeer or moose).
In my opinion, this book is worthy to read because it makes you think about yourself. You will consider what is the most important for you – a family, money or something else. I suppose it change your actual life. At least, you recharge your batteries and enjoy Alaska scenery.
