Is knowing facts as important as understanding ideas and concepts?

Deep understanding of ideas or concepts is critical while solving a problem. However, in order to deal with most of more complicated situations one needs more than just knowledge about theory. In such cases, only the recognition of important facts could guarantee a proper resolution. Awareness of particular phenomena is critical for understanding empirical studies as well as applying projects and ideas to real world.

In many fields of study, theories and concepts are built on facts attained throughout experiments. The best example could be physics, whose laws were formulated only due to observation of the world. For instance, Isaac Newton, great physicist, would never have his concept, had he not noticed some peculiar behaviors of bodies in the gravitational field. In physics the most important skill is to interpret the phenomenon accurately and precisely. And this is possible only after one has identified all the details associated in the theme and distinguished those less from those more important ones.

Moreover, perhaps all of us would agree that there are exceptions from almost all theories. Consider the study of urban planning. In this field, one has to learn about various models of city design, which attempt to make the area as comfortable and facilitated as possible. However, still after understanding all of those ideas, one cannot simply apply the acquired knowledge to life. Obviously, each urban area has its own specific traits, which makes the models unsuitable at some points. In such situation, a person should consider all factors, all forces which affect the land to best plan its structure. He or she should bring some modifications to already existing designs, to best suit the potential city. Moreover, the knowledge about the smallest details is requisite, when constructing the security systems. Engineers must predict the worst situation possible to build a system which would be infallible in most extreme situations.

Apart from what has been stated before, in some situations using ready concepts is even impossible. For instance, in crime investigations, where almost all cases are different, using a strict scheme would be futile. On the other hand, gathering the proofs in forms of fingerprint or DNA-materials is substantial, while seeking the culprit. Another good illustration is the psychological therapy. Because each individual is different from the other, with his or her own characteristics, habits, background and problems, the treatment must be prepared for each one separately. It must best suit his or her needs not those of another person.

To sump up, understanding only an idea or a concept is useless. It is critical to perceive also all important facts that surround each case. Only then is one able to best solve a problem.
