China, officially called
the People
's Republic of China, is one of greatest countries in the world. Beijing is China's capital. China, the fourth
largest country, is located in East Asia
and borders Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Bhutan Russia, Vietnam, Loa, Burma, Nepal, India, North Korea, and Mongolia. Compared to the United States, China is slightly smaller. It is 9,571,300 km2
(3,695,500 sq. mi.
). The population
had reached 1,306,313,800 by the year 2005 and it is
the only country in the world that has
a One Child Policy
in effort to slow down the population growth. (

of years old civilization.
China is similar to the United States in terms of the weather conditions. Asian Monsoons control China's climate. Typhoons are common between July and November, the rainy season. Mountains make up about one-third of China's area. (Cite). China has 22 provinces and 5 autonomous zones including Hong Kong and Macao which used to be under the control of Britain and Portugal. As a country with many languages and hundreds of ethnic groups, Mandarin is considered its official language with 55 ethnic groups officially recognized.
After coming to power in 1949, The People's Republic of China was founded by Mao Zedong, then the China Communist Party's leader (CCP). Under the communist regime, China has dramatically changed. China, however, had encountered many obstacles at that time. Foreign visitors were not allowed to visit China until 1970. The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous tourist sites. The imperial palace, now a museum, is also a popular place to visit.
The Chinese economy grew slowly, as did the development of the country. Shortly after taking office in late 1970s, Deng Xiaoping, Mao's successor, launched the economic reformation. Reformer Deng decided to start the first Free Market Reformation ever in China's history and welcomed all foreign investments. The Chinese economy has changed and rapidly grown ever since. In 2001, China became a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Agricultural products, electronic equipment and mined base metals are China's main exports.
