Hey, the following is my speech. Please proofread it for me. Thanks!
Becoming Métis Script
l Melissa Nelson’s a mixed Native American Indian
l The main idea of this essay is to decolonize the mind in order to find one’s identity (In this case, the Native Indians) and to honor the place where he or lives.
l When Western Europeans came, all Indians were sent to residential school where it was forbidden to speak their own language.
l Therefore, Indians were struggling to find their authentic voice
Melissa Nelson has provided some solutions – to decolonize one’s mind.
1. Decolonizing the mind does not mean to go against European heritage
u Nelson argues their people should be introduced beyond the Western scientific paradigm and Western culture.
2. Decolonizing the mind gives people a chance to see the world from many, many perspectives.
u Creativity, for instance, such as writing poems allows one to express his or her view on certain environmental issues.
3. Decolonizing the mind by questioning
u Ask things like where do thoughts and ideas come from
u If, say, someone’s interested in Native American spirituality, he or she must learn about the colonial history of North America.
u Only learning from the past allows us to progress
Some parts of the reading have disturbed me tremendously
l It is bitter to hear that the Indians are sometimes referred as the “lazy, dirty Indians”.
l Also, many deep ecologists consider that the Indians are anti-environmentalists
l Many Native Americans has lost their identity, culture and heritage.
l Lastly, most of their beliefs and their thoughts seem worthless to know
How are you?
O god!
