Can Google continue to scale with the internet?

Introduction:

In order to determine whether Google can continue to scale with the internet, it is necessary to analyse Google’s existing and upcoming technologies which make it unique, these technologies include Pagerank, utilising of cloud computing, crawling, anchor propagation and other key features which will be elaborated upon later.

Firstly, if we consider Google’s prime Pagerank technology. This technology observes incoming links to websites to determine the validity of the resource in question. Following observation, if there is something of value on the website – it will be linked to by Google.
Various mechanisms are employed to try and assess which information is the most important or relevant to the terms used in the search query. These mechanisms determine how old the website is, how relevant the material is to the subject in question and how many links there is to a page, if there are a lot, the more likely it will be website of authentic value. Google couples such with other technologies in order to evaluate the trustworthiness and credibility of all WebPages submitted on the World Wide Web, which makes it the World’s top search engine. However, it is worth noting that Google uses algorithms which are almost purely mathematical, the equation of such is not publicised and remain confidential for obvious reasons.
Google’s unique Pagerank technology is evidently providing efficiency in assisting Google’s index of the World Wide Web and will no doubt play an important role in helping Google scale with the internet in the future.

In addition to this, Google is able to scale the internet so vastly through its state-of-the-art crawling technology. Search bots are programmed to ‘crawl’ the web in order to build a searchable index for Google’s central search engine.
Google employs a more complex method of crawling and uses two versions of search bots being ‘deepbot’ and ‘freshbot’. Deepbot attempts to crawl every link available on the web and index as many pages as it can whereas the Freshbot seeks freshly available content and websites which are updated most frequently. These highly acclaimed ‘Googlebots’ contribute a substantial amount of influence in helping Google index the web.

Furthermore, Google also makes use of anchor text to optimise its search engine capabilities. This idea of propagating anchor text to the page it refers to is especially useful because it aids searching of non-textual information and as a result the search coverage is obtained with fewer downloaded items. However, Google incorporates such technology as it provides better quality search results. Admittedly, it is technically difficult to employ due to the colossal amounts of data which must be processed, but this is what gives Google an edge over its competitors.

This may bring us onto the question; how does Google handle such a vast amount of operations? Google incorporates a colossal amount of information technology to enable it to scale such a volume of the World Wide Web. In particular, Google employs a relatively new concept known as ‘Cloud Computing’. This is sometimes technically referred to as ‘utility computing’ and is basically a way of extending an IT system’s existing capabilities by stitching together various components and making such available as a virtualized resource pool available across the network. Therefore this ‘Cloud’ creates an illusion of a single access point catering for all of the computing needs of consumers. It is said that Google’s cloud consists of a network made of hundreds of thousands stretching to a million cheap servers; such structure is only going to be built upon as time progresses which leads me to believe that Google will continue to have the ability to scale the internet.

Notably Google wouldn’t be where it is today without its financial backing and vast array of investors. It is necessary to consider the financial strengths of Google when addressing whether or not Google is able to continue scaling with the internet. Google’s economic viability may be largely accredited to its assertive domination of the online marketing trade which has been achieved due to its premium Adsense mechanism. Many people may not have noticed, but Google has laced Advertisements throughout most of its applications, for example if you’re search for camping trips on the Google Search Engine you will notice sponsored links on the right hand side and the top of the page. Generally, these sponsored links display adverts of different websites and the more popular the keyword chosen the more money required for the advertisement.

Undoubtedly Google generates a considerable amount of its income through other subsidiaries such as YouTube, Blogger and Android and through early investment.
Google in its early days did a good job in displaying its future potential; allowing early investors to confide in the company’s ultimate success who are, today reaping gargantuan profits. In fact, the “biggest pay-off in venture history” was recorded by venture capitalist Michael Moritz as he received a gigantic return of $3 billion from the $12.5 million he invested on behalf of Google employees in 1999.
In addition, Google is thought to owe a great deal to the taxpayers of the United States as Google is in essence built on a foundation of research and development, funded by taxpayers. Nowadays, the two founders of Google: Larry Page and Sergey Brin are worth more than $3.8 billion which propels them into the top 20 of the Forbes 400.
This advantageous economic factor will indisputably play a role in sustaining the online giant’s attempts to continue to scale with the vastly growing internet, as without financial backing Google wouldn’t exist today.

Whilst Google appears as an unstoppable online giant, capable of scaling the internet in the future, we should acknowledge that Google faces several challenges in accomplishing this. For example an increase in scalability would, in turn lead to an increase in the complexity of Google’s current IT infrastructure and mass modifications to such would have to be carried out.
