You need to work on achieving clarity. (The writer (we hope) always knows what he means to way, but the reader can only be sure of understanding the writer if the writer uses clear language.)

Your wife died.
Your mother died.
Your best friend died.
Your best friend lost his job and then was in an auto accident that left him crippled.
