On a Common cold
A cold may be common:but it should not for that reason be despised. Many common things partake of the nature of a miracle;and a cold is protean, amazing in its diversity. What an inventive germ must lurk behind its malevolent manoeuvres, behind these sneezings and coughings and red noses, these pains in the teeth and in the roots of the hair, these sore eyes and achings in the limbs, this difficult breathing, these voices, husky and grating or speaking out of hearing somewhere,as it seems,in another dimension, from mouths that open and shut to no accompanying sound.
