When I was a boy, my parents and my grandparents always told me to listen to them because they had more life experience than me, what they said was good for me. I always thought that they were right but I also heard that life is like a wall, you have to build it bit by bit from personal experience.

When we are little boys, we don’t have a lot of experience and we always make mistakes. Sometimes we may be frustrated and desperate when we make a very big mistake. We may give up and never try again. That’s why we need to listen to people’s advice because they have more experience than we do. They have overcome many ups and downs. They know how life is and they know how to walk through it smoothly without facing a big obstacle. It’s like someone holding our arms when we start to walk. We got the courage and support from them without hurting ourselves badly.

However, when we grow older, we always question whether people told us is true or false. We don’t want just to listen to people and follow what they say completely without thinking like a robot. That’s because we have our mind and experience to tell us what is right and wrong. If you just listen to people without trying, you will never know why they are true and you will never comprehend them totally. Also, There are many things that you just can’t learn by people, you have to fall, so that you know how tough life is and you will cherish it and love it and you can only learn these things by personal experience. Life is not a smooth and straight road, though there may be many slopes and holes in front of you, if you don’t walk through them by yourself, you will never grow up and to be independent.

Listening to people’s advice and our own personal experience are like our two legs, you can not walk with either one of them. There are no preferences on either one of them. If you walk with only either one of your legs, you will fall very easily and you may never stand up again. You need both legs to help you to walk through this bumpy and long road.
