Subtlety and prepositions.

If I say:
I like to plunk myself in front of the computer late at night when everybody is alseep and no one is looking over my shoulder.

Do you see anything negative here?

No. There it has a feeling of "Finally ... " about it.

I am kind of tired of beating a dead horse to death but I can certainly "plunk myself in front of the computer at noon and stay plunked in front of it for six hours".

The bottom line is I don't think we can find verbs like lounging, sprawled, etc in regards to computers simply because a computer is an interactive medium and we can't sit in front of one in a semi comatosed state like we can with a TV.

We think an hour or two together in the kitchen with an interested child beats equivalent time playing on a computer or plunked in front of a television set.

Surely there's another way to generate discussion than creating a mental picture of 14 children plunked in front of a TV watchingI Love Lucy reruns while their chain-smoking caregiver sips rye and Coke.

And now I'm back indoors while the sun is shining outside, my wrists are screaming for a break from the mouse and the keyboard, my feet are itching to hit the dusty trails, and my lungs are ready for big mouthfuls of salty air. Alas, I'm plunked in front of the monitor, enjoying the delightful output of the building's HVAC. How long until I retire? Only another 35 years to go. Drat.

Well then, if you remember your original question, you have just answered it yourself. I was thinking about computers only.

As for the word plunk (I am getting plunked out all right) I do understand what you say but I also believe it can have a positive connotation as well.

I plunk myself in front my PC every day to play online games and crossword puzzles.

No gun to my head - I do it because I like to do it.
