    Yep, but specifically locked up in a cell - not just generally in prison (the 'bang' refers to the cell door slamming shut). After a fight, you'd be knocked about, bashed about, banged about, or even cut up; but not banged up.

    Sorry, I missed that you had said "to impregnate."

    I love these little differences.

    We'd say something like "I heard Peter was in an accident. How is he?" and answer with "He's pretty banged up, but otherwise okay." This would mean bruises and soreness, but nothing broken, no internal injuries.

    Another one to add to my "divided by a common language" list.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
