Try this sentence and situation:-
A student at Prinicpal's office entrance asking for permission,
May I come in or Can I come in.
A boy proposing to a girl:-
May I hold your hand or Can I hold your hand.
So, the may is always used where some kind of permission or consent is reuqired from another person while can is used for the potential to do certain act.
