I have a question for you . In a business magazine I read these following lines.

Before Dubai usurped its position, Bahrain was well-known as the financial capital of the Gulf. Some analysts believe that given the former's current travails, the island state may go on to achieve regional pre-eminence in this field again.

I did not understant: "Some analysts believe that given the former's current travails"

can you help me please ? in explaning more with an easy way

Dubai (the former) has problems. Bahrain (the latter) once was the financial capital of the Gulf area. Now that Dubai has problems, Bahrain may regain the postion of being the financial capital of the Gulf area.
