According to the "Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary":

"The correct preposition to use after experience is of" but I heve found that it is very common "experience in".

Is it wrong to write "Extensive experience in sales"?

Is it wrong to write "Extensive experience in sales"? Yeah, this is perfectly correct. Perhaps - but note I'm not certain - it has come into use as a short way of saying 'in the field/area of ...'
