Is your father Irish? If so he was probably saying "Amadàn" which is Irish Gaelic and means "idiot" or "brainless".

The word I've used since the 70s has been normaloid to exactly capture the idea of an unquestioning and unthinking fellow-citizen, with the '-oid' ending perhaps evoking a certain automaton-like attitude or behaviour (as in 'android') as well as suggesting that "true" normalcy is not what normaloids think it to be). I've normally used it as a noun, but I suppose it fits in fine as an adjective.

Well "a follower"is more like it,tagging along is not really an English word.It is more of an expression right?New here guys hope to be here more often...I am in Asia by the way...

You can just call the people sheep. If you were to say, "Those people are just a bunch of sheep," it is understood to mean that they accept orders without question and follow the "herd."
