I have just moved my last post to the adjoining section because I can't wait so long to get an answer. I'm flying any day now and I desperately need to call my host family. At least, to find out if I should take any electric appliances along. As far as I'm aware all Canadian electric devices operate at lower voltages than those in Russia

You were so right in saying this! Now that I'm in Canada I can see why you said so. There are lots of people speaking English with an accent. There are such a lot of different nationalities here! Most of them are residents, so they speak very good Enlgish. Our teachers are native Canadians though.
