When I was a kid our teacher used to put this at the end of our homework as a sign that everything was OK.
I have no idea what it's called in English though. Does anyone know?
I've never seen it used as a sign of approval. It looks very like the typesetter's mark meaning 'delete'.

It reminds me very much of the 'H' former boss of mine, a German whose name began with that letter, used to scrawl on my expenses claims to signify his approval of my figures
