Default Different between "light went out" and "lights went out"

    Hello.
Please explain me, when do we say "the light went out" and when - "the lights went out"?
If I want (I need) to use here the word "light" in figurative meaning, as "the world, sunlight, a shaft of sunlight", what will be correct: "light" or "lights"?

    Thank you.

When one light goes out - the light went out.
When more than one light goes out - the lights went out.

This all depends on context. I saw the light from the sun. I saw the lights of the stars. She was the light of my life. When the lights come back on.
    Thank you.
