    Interesting choice of words.

    "Casual" has nothing to do with it of course. It's just the process of language evolution.

    Mind you, there's a first! It's fascinating to hear some one suggesting the British are more "casual" about the language than Americans!

    I don't know though... At university (we're learning British English) we are taught to use the possessive in academic writing and for sounding posh

    The reason I used it is that thirty years ago, people in the UK were bemoaning the influence of American, which they claimed didn't maintain the standards of the language, but now you see many more conservative voices coming from American speakers, while British speakers are quite happy with all sorts of changes. The positions do seem to have reversed recently.
