They might have been similar a few centuries ago (I wouldn't know, I'm not a history linguist) but I don't think have much in common nowadays. One huge difference is that the English grammar does not have grammatical cases, while in German there are 4 of them. The pronunciation is also very different, not to mention the vocabulary. The word order isn't as strict as it is in English and also there's the fact that there are only 4 grammatical tenses in German. I could dive deeper into this matter, but I guess I've made my point.
