Default Is the last sentence correct in its expression?

That's not bad, but you should revise it a little. For one thing, you need the definite article in the first sentence, thus:

  • The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival that the Chinese celebrate. Behind it is a beautiful legend.

To make it more idiomatic you might want to change it a bit more, thus:

  • The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival that the Chinese celebrate. Behind it is a beautiful story. It is the legend of....

Or perhaps:

  • The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival that the Chinese celebrate. Behind it is a legend that has enchanted Chinese people for centuries.

Or:

  • The Mid-Autumn Festival is a festival that the Chinese celebrate. Behind it is a story that has enchanted Chinese people for centuries.

I prefer story to legend. It (story) is the more generic word. However, legend is okay there, I am quite sure.

Did I overdo it?

:D
