Default Need your opinions on your country's english education

Hello teachers or future teachers,

I'd like to know why English education is important in your country?

English may be your mother tongue or foreign language.

I welcome whatever your opinions are if they reflect your countries' specific educational or social situations.

Many thanks in advance.

P.S. Here in korea, english is getting more important and lots of people try to master it as possible as they can. I think that competing or collabrating with other nations, engligh takes an critical role in economical or cultural exchanges.

i live in Iran, and in my country, most people try to learn English, children start going to English classes since they are 6 or sometimes younger. but NO ONE knows the reason.
nearly all cities in Iran have one branch of English at their universities, and each year. many english students at university are getting their second degree ( like 3 of my friends. they were graduated in electronic, and then went to university, and stydied English.)

and s.th else. if a person wants to be rich in Iran, they tell him go and manage a language institute.

I am not a teacher. However I can write down few points:
1. Globalisation (as Tdol mentioned)
2. Increased number of IT companies, which have the branches all over the world. Hence an employee working in a IT company need to interact with other employees, who stay in other parts of the world. Obviously, the employee has to use a common language: English.
Cheers,
Jessy

I am living in a developing country where there are a many NGOs and aid agencies working and they generate a market for English which is the lingua franca for them.
