Default The Both

Why do people say "the both of them" instead of just "both of them". I don't believe this is proper grammar. Is this just some new fad? I find the lack of language skills in the younger generation horrible. There is no respect for the language anymore. And spelling....what ever happened to proper spelling and proper abbreviations....suddenly abbreviations have no period and they are changed from what they've always been.....I just saw September (formerly Sept.) abbreviated as Sep and that was all and it was in a widely read publication.
