Sentence Patterns
Hi, thanks for your help.
I am having trouble with these, please check and see if I am correct.
Patterns: 1: Subject Predicate
2. Sub. Pred. Direct Obj.
3: Sub. Pred. Indirect Obj. Direct Obj.
4: Sub. Linking Verb Predicate Noun
5: Sub. Linking Verb Pred. Adjective
1. Hoping to win first prize, Tom entered the contest.
I say it is pattern 4
2. She always stood up for what she believed in.
I say pattern 3
3. London, which is the largest city in England, is also the capital of that country.
I say pattern 4
4. He showed his father his sincerity by cooperating with all his teachers at school.
I say pattern 3
5. To err is human; to forgive is divine.
I say pattern 5
-
1. Hoping to win first prize, Tom entered the contest.
This doesn't have a linking verb.
-
2. She always stood up for what she believed in.
I see only one object here (what she believed in)
-
4. He showed his father his sincerity by cooperating with all his teachers at school.
I don't see 'by co-operating...' as an object.

I don't see 'by co-operating...' as an object.

Exactly what is it then if it is not an object?

"Cooperating" is a gerund, introducing a gerund phrase: gerund + two prepositional phrase modifiers. The gerund phrase is the object of the preposition "by".
This sentence would be: Subject-verb-indirect object-direct object (-adverb), IMO.

I think sincerity is the direct object.

I agree.

I meant I didn't see it as the object of the verb.

Thanks, Mike! Your opinion is invariably a worthy one.
