UNESCO's Red Book on Endangered Languages paints a grim picture for many small languages: In Europe, there 9 languages listed as nearly extinct, with 26 in serious danger and a further 38 in danger. In North-East Asia, 2 are possibly...

I think that users of this endangered languages have to de the effort to preserve them, because they'll loose a major part of their culture if they get extinct. Is such important as well that local governments helps as much as possible to preserve them. Once they loose their own language is no way back and it'll be replaced for english or another 'great' language, loosing the place part of it personality....

by the way, is catalan in this black list of endangered languages? :?

cheers!!

I think the development of the information society will inevitably destroy most small languages. This does mean a great loss, but there is a payoff in greater and better human communication. However, it is very sad to see so many languages dying. However, coming from England, where the minority languages have died, I see that we can survive without them. It's an uncomfortable question.
