What will you use English for, and where?

Unless you are only going to do business with/socialise with Americans, listen to as many English speakers as you can.

I've found some Americans can't understand any other accent than their own. I even saw a site where Americans listed which accents they could understand. Some of them couldn't even understand people from other parts of America. Learn English from American sit-coms, soaps and televangelists and you'll be able to communicate with these people just fine .

I was just joking about the last part .

Well, my initial goal is to get a BA in English and then, hopefully, an MA or a PhD...

After completing my education I plan to teach English... Preferably in the Middle East.

I get your point, or at least I understand what you're trying to say...
But you see I am a Muslim myself (and I look like one--I have a long beard and I wear "Muslim attire") so I don't think that an American accent would be a problem.

Unless of course you mean that I shouldn't sound American for some other reason...

I was just kidding around. I don't know what the feeling towards Americans is in the part of the Middle East where you are going. I've just been in a debate in another forum with some American fundamentalist Christians who want to nuke Mecca, and threaten Muslims with bombs. But that's another story.
