How can I explain students how to select a specific form of verb to use, that is, whether to respond in present (I ride) or gerund (I am riding)?

Same with past (I rode) or past participle (I had ridden)?

How can I explain students how to select a specific form of verb to use, that is, whether to respond in present (I ride) or gerund (I am riding)?

What form is used usually depends on what the speaker wants to say. "I ride" is probably a statement about a person's tendencies or habits. "I am riding" is present progressive. It is a statement about what the person is doing at that moment.

Same with past (I rode) or past participle (I had ridden)?

"I rode" is simple past. "I had ridden" is past perfect. They require different contexts.

Use sample sentences. That's always helpful, especially if you put them in context.

'I had ridden' has to be before something esle in the past:
I had never ridden before I went on holiday to Ireland last summer.
