Default Arms

Hello everybody!!

I've come across the term "Arms" many times. I have often wondered what it means.

They come normally in Pubs and Hotel signs.

The Queens Arms", "The Eldorado Arms", etc.

Could someone please explain what it means, Because I'm sure it does not talk about bodily arms, does it??

Thank you very much in advance.

In that context it's talking about a Coat of arms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . You'll notice that pubs called The <something> Arms have a shield for a sign. Originally, it presumably marked the family of the publican; I had a cousin named Charles Slaughter, and he owned a pub called The Slaughter Arms (which had been in the family for generations). I expect some pubs, though, just pick that name because they feel like it.

Thank you very much indeed Bobk!! I had a feeling it had something to do with arms, but I thought it was battle arms, as a gun, rifle, etc.

Very much appreciated!!

Well, battles have something to do with it. In the days before uniforms (a relatively new idea), the coat of arms was used as a way of telling the difference between friend and foe on the battle-field.
