Question What's the difference between colonialism and imperialism?

Please give me as many examples as you can and distinguish the terms. Don't make them sound like the same words! I need 2 distinct definitions.

I’m not a teacher.

Hi hugsandkises,

There is a link which explains in detail the essence of the term colonialism.

colonialism: Definition from Answers.com

Imperialism (n) = The control of one or a number of countries by a dominant nation.

This control may be political, economic, or both, and indicates a degree of dependence in the subordinate nation. Many writers take the word as a synonym for colonialism, but imperialism can exist without the creation of formal colonies, which usually require military force and the institution of a colonial administration.

Regards,

V.

Well i studied something about once ago but i forget the details but the main point is that

Colonize is taking the land and treasures of lands and leave them to death without changing anything

The Roman in early periods is an example of colonialism they did not change the language of England

England also were colonizing India for they take land and colonize but it differs in the sense that they did not change people religion nor languages

on the other hand imperialism is beside taking lands and treasure changing the language and religion ...etc
Napoleon the french leader was known for his imperialism act to the lands and change their languages...

i'm hoping if these brief information will help u ^^

To colonise somewhere implies that the external country is transferring settlers to live and work in another territory, partly to benefit economically from the result and partly to ensure overpopulation is avoided in the home country.

Imperialism is the imposition of legal, political and economic control over another country, regardless of that country's own status.
