when should one use the word"notwithstanding" ?

I know it can be use as a preposition in a sentence. I have seen lawyers use it often in their conversation with clients.
The word is synonymous with nevertheless but I still have difficulty using it in regular conversation.

I would not advise you to try to use this word in general conversation. It is rather pedantic and not frequent.

Notwithstanding this statement, you might like to try writing some sentences to see if you have understood it.

It has caused many problems in understanding legal documents such as bylaws.

If anyone uses it, ask them to re-phrase the sentence using other words.
