I understand what do you mean, but the X in x-ray for French is a consonant sound and we put a but the right it's an.

I meant that the name of the letter "x" is pronounced /eks/ in English, thus beginning with a vowel sound.

I thought that something similar was true in French (don't you pronounce it /iks/ ?). If not, my mistake.

In French it's Rayon-X so it doesn't begin with a vowel sound. Somebody asked. And X is pronounced [iks] in French.
