The current American administration has a policy of not admitting to making mistakes, yet it has done so in the recent tragic events with the hurricane. This admission, therefore, went against the grain. The grain is the direction in a piece of wood- if you go against the grain, the surface becomes rough, if you go with the grain, you can make it smooth. ;-)
